How do I know if my child needs new skates?

TL;DR
Replace your child's skates if they complain of pain, the blades are bent or dull, or their feet have outgrown the current pair.
Great question — figuring out when to replace skates is one of those things most parents learn the hard way.

The clearest sign is discomfort or pain during or after practice. If your skater complains about their feet, ankles, or shins hurting, worn-out skates are often the culprit. Check the blade alignment too: if it's visibly bent or the edges are dull despite recent sharpening, that's a safety issue worth addressing.

Growth is another factor. Kids' feet change fast, and a skate that's too tight restricts blood flow and makes edges nearly impossible to control. A properly fitted skate should have about a thumb's width of space at the heel when they're standing. If they're jamming their toes into the end, it's time.

Watch for performance changes as well. If your skater suddenly struggles with balance or edges feel unpredictable, the boot might be breaking down inside where you can't see it. Worn padding and a loose heel are invisible but definitely affect control.

One more reality: if they've had their skates for three-plus years of regular skating (especially at Intermediate level and up), the materials have likely fatigued. A coach can give you a second opinion during a fitting discussion.
